USPTO and USPTO patents
The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is an agency under the
United States Department of Commerce. One of USPTO's major responsibilities is the
examination, issuance, and management of patents to protect inventions. USPTO issues 3,500 to 4,000 patents per week, and the USPTO database contains more than 6.5 million
patents filed since 1790 by
inventors from more than 170 countries. USPTO provides full-text access to
patents published after 1976, which can be searched by almost every data field of the patent. USPTO also provides
scanned images of the patents published between 1790 and 1976, which can be
searched by issue date, patent number, and current US patent classification.
