NSF and NSF grants

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency created by Congress in 1950. With an annual budget of about $5.5 billion, it is the funding source for approximately 20 percent of all federally supported basic research conducted by America's colleges and universities. In many fields such as Nanoscale science and engineering, NSF is the major source of federal backing. NSF provide online title-abstract access for grants issued since 1989, which total nearly 200,000 grants in total. The grants can be searched using nearly all the data fields of a grant.

NSE grants in NSF

NSE grants in NSF Nanoscale science and engineering (NSE) and related areas have seen rapid growth in recent years. The NSF funds research and education in NSE through grants (grants, contracts, and cooperative agreements). About 6% of NSF's budget was dedicated to NSE.

The NSE grants were retrieved by conducting a keyword search on grant title, program, and abstract using a list of NSE keywords. There are 10,114 NSE-related NSF grants involving 9 directorates, 52 NSF organizations, and 412 programs between 1991 and 2006. In the statistics, the awards are organized according to the calendaristic year of the start date of the award.
